Our Blog

On our blog we share with you the experiences we have while sailing togehter

Saint Lucia - our first Caribbean island

Nicolaas Heyning

here is our first Caribbean adventure. After spending some time in Rodney Bay, we started moving south and the island got more and more beautiful: Mangrove, volcano, mud baths, rainforest, snorkeling, hiking, luxury swimming pool chilling, some sailing, nice anchoring spots, a veggie market with a DJ and very kind and helpful people. The highlight of this island was the visit of Wied en Diederik.

We also have some news:

We’ve got a new phone number +44 793759879. With this number we don’t depend on wifi anymore and have the possibility to chat (only text) via whatsapp, Facebook messenger etc. with you guys. Our Dutch number we keep of course, but the number has no service here, so we use it only when there is wifi.
For the travelers out there, we can only recommend this service from CHATSIM,  it’s a great way to communicate while traveling and costs only 12 Euro per year. Use this promotion code CAMB9DUJ in case you order it, then we both get some credits for free.

Peace & Love,

Crossing the atlantic ocean

Nicolaas Heyning

We left Amsterdam on the 1st of August 2014 with the goal to sail to the Carribean. It took us longer then expected and 3 boats to get here, but we finally made it and are now in paradise.

The crossing was exhausting, adventurous and prosperous. Samuel adapted amazingly well. Java sailed like a super champion!

Now we relax in Carribean waters. We don't have any plans, we just float with the flow and see what happens. There is a lot to discover here, so we will keep you posted.

Love and happy 2017

Sailing from La Gomera to Mindelo

Nicolaas Heyning

We have made it!

We sailed in 9 days to Mindelo.

It was a very nice trip, with lots of variety.  The crew was well and everybody enjoyed it. It was also great to have arrived at Mindelo.

Now we sail on to the Caribbean.  Probably two to three weeks at sea. We are excited to go again!

Summer Sailing

Nicolaas Heyning

We have had a great time sailing around the canary islands getting to know Java.
It was very nice to see our friends from Holland and La Gomera. We have learned a lot about ourselves and feel good!

It is time for us to go on and leave the canary islands behind us. We will go south and enjoy the open ocean again. Samuel cannot wait to see dolphins again and we are joined by our wonderful crew Sabrina and Ruben.

One year later are happy to continue our journey from La Gomera with good memories and peace of mind.

Sailing with Java

Nicolaas Heyning

Hello everybody!

It has been a while since our last update, because we have been busy sailing with our lovely boat Java. We have discovered the north part of Tenerife, which was very beautiful. We came back to San Sebastian de La Gomera, which was great seeing our friends again. So far the boat is handling well. It is difficult sailing around the islands because the wind can be upredictable and strong.

We are happy, we are healty and we are enjoying the life here. Samuel is doing very well, he is slowy changing from baby to little boy and we are happy to be there with him. When we are sailing he is very calm and it´s nice to spend the time together without distractions.

It is a special feeling to be on the move again. We left Las Palmas not knowing when we will come back. Finally we are living again the freedom of sailing combined with a wonderfull home. We even have a washing machine now, her name is Candy!

Every time we come to a new marine the first thing we want to know is how are the showers, it´s funny how the importance of things in your world can shift. Next we discover the local markets where Rea immediatly makes friends. Samuel soon becomes a local hero with his blond hair and serious looks.

It is good that we get to know the boat, the way she sails and what her weak points are. There is always something to fix and something to improve, luckely Nicolaas loves to do this kind of work. It´s a search to find the right materials (in Spanish), but local mechanics are always friendly to help.

We love that we are living outside all the time. We are always in contact with the wind, the sun keeps us warm and each night we see how the moon rises a little bit later. There are animals everywhere around, each time we go sailing we are greeted by a group or two of dolphins, which helps us get through the rough parts.

We have closed an important circle in our trip by coming back to La Gomera. We received warm welcomes from our friends, within a day the whole town knew we were back. This winter we spend so many days at the beach looking at the sea, talking about what happened and what we wanted to do next. Now we are at the same beach again and we know that are sailing adventure didn´t finish, it just has started.

Working on Java

Nicolaas Heyning

We took Java out of the water so we could work on the underwater ship. A lot of work but fun to do. Nicolaas feels like a kid working with all the big machines!

We worked on the rudder, the prop shaft and the keel. Everything is very good now and we feel good about Java.

Welcome Java

Nicolaas Heyning

We are back!!!

After three special months on La Gomera we are back on the water with our new sailboat Java. We feel very lucky that we have a second change to continue our adventure. We are healthy and happy.

We want to thank everyone for their support and love in the past months. And we thank Sara, Gilles and Mateo for letting us take over their lovely home.

The end of the Witte Walrus journey

Nicolaas Heyning

unfortunately our journey ended abruptly on the cliffs of La Gomera.

It has been a fantastic time and we are grateful for these intens three months. We feel very sorry for Wally and we miss him very much. He was a good boat and a wonderful house.
